Recruitment process for academic staff

To ensure that we recruit the most qualified and motivated candidates, the recruitment process for academic positions follows a structured and transparent procedure. This page outlines the main steps, from selection to employment decision, and includes practical information for international applicants.

1. Selection process

After the deadline of the vacancy announcement, the Academic Appointments Board reviews all applications. Those that do not meet the requirements are removed.

The assessment of expertise and qualifications is based on the vacancy announcement and the person specification. These are created using Lund University’s appointment rules and the qualification requirements in the Higher Education Ordinance.

2. Review by external experts

Applications that pass the first step are sent to academic experts, usually from other universities. They make a detailed assessment, which can take several months.

3. Candidate evaluation

Based on the expert reviews, some candidates are invited to the next step. This may include interviews, trial lectures, research seminars, tests, or other activities. Faculties may also ask external reviewers to take part. References are usually checked at this stage.

4. Offer of employment

The chosen candidate receives an offer from the recruiting manager. This includes details about salary, start date, and introduction to the workplace.

5. Final decision

Once the offer is accepted and, if needed, a residence permit is approved, Lund University issues an employment decision. This decision is the official contract. No separate document is signed.

Appealing an employment decision

If you have applied for a position at Lund University and another applicant has been selected, you have the right to appeal the decision. Please note that decisions on doctoral positions cannot be appealed.
