Insurance for incoming students
Are you nominated for an exchange or admitted to a programme or course? If you're moving to Sweden to study, you're an incoming student. You'll be covered by either Student IN or FAS+, and will also have separate personal injury insurance during school hours.

Student IN or FAS+ insurance
The type of insurance you get through Lund University, Student IN or FAS+, depends on whether you have to pay tuition fees here.
- If you don't have to pay tuition fees, you will normally get Student IN.
- If you have to pay tuition fees, you will normally get FAS+.
If you are eligible, you will automatically be assigned the correct insurance. See below for details and exceptions.
If you don't have to pay tuition fees to study at Lund University, you will in most cases be covered by Student IN. This is usually the case if you are:
- an exchange student
- an EU, EEA or Swiss citizen
- exempt from paying tuition fees under certain conditions.
If you have to pay tuition fees to study at Lund University, you will in most cases be covered by FAS+. This applies regardless of how you pay – with your own funds or with a scholarship.
Check to see if any of the following situations apply to you. If this is the case, you are not eligible for Student IN or FAS+ insurance and may need to take action yourself.
If you already live in Sweden
If you already live in Sweden and have a (temporary) personal identity number, you must supplement your personal injury insurance during school hours with private insurance. Home insurance (Swedish: hemförsäkring) is usually a good place to start, as it offers broad cover. You should also consider accident insurance for your leisure time (Swedish: olycksfallsförsäkring).
If you are an incoming trainee
As an incoming trainee, you are not normally covered by Student IN. Contact the relevant faculty (or similar) – they are responsible for arranging the appropriate insurance.

When Student IN and FAS+ apply
Student IN and FAS+ are valid from two weeks before the start of your studies until two weeks after the end of your studies. This includes Orientation Weeks and final exams. Check the exact dates in your Letter of Acceptance (LoA) or Notification of Admission Status (NoAS). During this period, the insurance applies 24 hours a day, 7 days a week in Sweden.
What the insurance covers
During the period specified above, the insurance covers:
- your direct travel from your country of residence to Sweden at the start of your studies
- your direct travel from Sweden to your country of residence at the end of your studies
- a range of emergencies, losses, damages and legal situations in Sweden involving you, including:
- disability and death benefits
- medical and dental care cover
- property cover
- liability cover (home insurance)
- legal expenses cover.
Note that insurance claims may have a deductible (part of the cost that you have to pay).

When you might need extra insurance
If your travel or activities fall outside the above conditions, you will most likely need private insurance to ensure sufficient cover and avoid problems. Below are some specific examples that you should read carefully.
Student IN and FAS+ only cover you as an individual student. Any family members joining you should ensure that they have or arrange sufficient insurance cover. Also see the information on the following page:
Below are examples of when Student IN and FAS+ do not apply or do not provide full cover. Consider whether you need additional private insurance.
Travel outside the time frame
- Situation: You arrive more than two weeks before the start of your studies to settle in early.
- What is needed: Private insurance to cover this period until two weeks before your studies begin.
Indirect travel
- Situation: You stop in Amsterdam for sightseeing on your way from your home country Australia to Sweden.
- What is needed: Private travel insurance for this part of your journey.
A (short) trip abroad
- Situation: You take a day trip to Copenhagen, Denmark (and you are not Danish). Or you go on a trip abroad to a country other than your home country.
- What is needed: Private travel insurance for any travel outside Sweden.
A stay in your home country
- Situation: You travel to your home country during a study break and cause damage to a borrowed laptop a few days after you've arrived.
- What is needed: Private insurance to cover your stay.
Routine health or dental care needs in Sweden
- Situation: You have a known health condition that requires regular medical visits.
- What is needed: Private health insurance to cover non-urgent, routine care.
Health care outside Sweden
- Situation: You need health care while visiting your home country or another country outside Sweden.
- What is needed: Private health insurance (recommended). EU/EEA students with a personal identity number and a Swedish European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) may be able to use Swedish general health insurance instead of private insurance in EU/EEA countries. You must actively apply for and be granted the EHIC from the Swedish Social Insurance Agency (Swedish: Försäkringskassan). Check with your insurance provider!
Careless behaviour
- Situation: You leave your laptop unattended in the library while going to the bathroom or lunchroom at your department, and it gets stolen.
- What is needed: Common sense – the insurance will not cover you if you have not taken reasonable measures to protect your belongings.
Family member involved in an incident
- Situation: Your spouse or child damages something in your accommodation or loses something borrowed.
- What is needed: Private insurance for family members.

Personal injury insurance during school hours
All students at Lund University are automatically covered by accident insurance. This is a separate insurance and is administered differently from Student IN and FAS+. Claims are also made and sent in a different way.
When personal injury insurance applies
The insurance applies during scheduled school hours. School hours are defined as activities organised by Lund University that your programme or course specifies as part of your studies. This also includes travel between your home address in Sweden and the University.
What the insurance covers
This insurance applies if you are injured in an accident or contract an illness in connection with your studies.
For the full terms and conditions, see the website of the Legal, Financial and Administrative Services Agency (Kammarkollegiet):
Personal injury insurance, terms and conditions
When you might need extra insurance
This insurance does not apply to (leisure) activities organised by other parties, such as student unions or student nations. For these situations, you need Student IN, FAS+ or private home and/or accident insurance.
